Defending champion Magnus Carlsen causes a scandal at the World Rapid Chess Championship in New York. The 34-year-old Norwegian declared his withdrawal from the tournament after violating the dress code.
He will not continue playing and will travel to "where the weather is a bit better than here", said Carlsen after failing to respond to an ultimatum from the organizers regarding his wardrobe. He was fined 200 dollars and told to change immediately for illegally turning up to the match in jeans on Friday. Carlsen refused and was subsequently disqualified for the next round. Carlsen then refused to continue the tournament in the remaining rounds.
"Mr. Magnus Carlsen violated the dress code by wearing jeans," the world federation FIDE announced. "These rules have been in place for years and are known to all participants and communicated to them before each event."
