Germany's handball team, Switzerland's next opponents on Friday, started the World Championship with a laborious victory.
The team of national coach Alfred Gislason won its opening game in Group A against Poland 35:28. The best German scorer in Herning, Denmark, was Renars Uscins with ten goals. Playmaker Juri Knorr, who scored five times, was forced to retire in the second half. The DHB team's next opponent in the preliminary round is Switzerland on Friday.
The first surprise came on the second day of the tournament in Oslo. Co-hosts Norway suffered a 26:29 defeat against Brazil in front of their own fans. The two-time World Championship silver medallists (2017, 2019) led by star player Sander Sagosen are now trailing in the battle for a place in the quarter-finals.
Brazil, on the other hand, celebrated one of their biggest successes at a major event. In 2016, the host Seleçao defeated Sweden and Germany, among others, on their way to the quarter-finals at the Rio Olympics. Best World Cup finish is 9th place from 2019.
