The six athletes involved are the former U23 European champion Tobias Buck-Gramcko, the two World Championship bronze medallists Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler as well as Max-David Briese, Moritz Augenstein and Louis Gentzik, who are all members of the national endurance team.
The accident occurred on Monday morning near Palma de Mallorca airport, not far from the team's headquarters. According to the association, a driver, who is said to be 89 years old, overlooked the group and drove head-on into them. National coach Lucas Schädlich, who was driving in the support vehicle, witnessed the accident.
Although none of the athletes suffered life-threatening injuries, there were numerous fractures, resulting in "a long break from training and competition for some of them", according to German Cycling.
The driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs, reported the island newspaper "Última Hora". The driver told the officers that he was distracted and had not seen the group.
