Bottom of the Champions League YB concedes eighth defeat in eighth game

Young Boys also lose their final Champions League game and leave the top flight with no points after a 1-0 defeat to Red Star Belgrade.

Young Boys wanted to bid an honorable farewell to the highest European football stage. To give the fans something back for their loyalty in this difficult season with a combative, offensively spectacular performance. That was the promise made by coach Giorgio Contini and right-back Lewin Blum on the eve of the final home game against Red Star Belgrade.

But this approach failed. Thoroughly. Because what the 31,500 fans saw in the once again sold-out Wankdorf was about as far removed from spectacle as Young Boys currently are from the national top flight.

On the European stage, the picture of yellow and black is even bleaker, and as the Serbian record champions in the person of Guelor Kanga fired a pithy shot at Marwin Keller's goal in the 69th minute and the YB goalkeeper had no chance of defending, the Belgrade side, who were also eliminated, won for the second time in this premier class.

Giorgio Contini's team rarely found the net. Darian Males and Silvere Ganvoula in the first half and Alan Virginius and Joël Monteiro in the second came closest to scoring with their attempts. But there was no sign of the power that YB have shown in previous European Cup appearances, meaning that Contini will have to wait for his first goal celebration as YB coach after four games in charge.

Young Boys thus wrote inglorious Swiss football history. With a goal difference of 3:24, they are the first Swiss club to remain without points in a European Cup campaign and finish the Champions League in 36th and last place.
