Dramatic final phase Lucerne achieves the big turnaround and defeats St.Gallen after trailing 2-0

FC Lucerne beat St. Gallen 3:2 in the seventh round of the Super League. The Central Swiss side showed morale and turned around a 2-0 deficit at the break.

There were two minutes left on the match clock when Luzern captain Pius Dorn got to the ball around 25 meters from goal. The German did not hesitate, took the shot and saw the ball wriggle into the net to make it 3:2 for the visitors. The home fans cheered just a short time later. However, the penalty that had already been whistled for St. Gallen following a foul by Pascal Loretz on Kevin Csoboth was withdrawn due to a previous offside position and the intervention of the video referee.

It was not an undeserved victory for Lucerne, even if very few spectators would have bet on an away win at the break. In the end, the visitors earned it thanks to a passionate second half. First Thibault Klidjé converted a fine attack in the 56th minute, then Kevin Spadanuda scored a deserved equalizer just seconds after coming on as a substitute ten minutes before the end. Klidjé should already have scored. But the 23-year-old missed twice from the best position after scoring the equalizer.

St. Gallen had everything under control in the first half. Albert Vallci from a corner and Willem Geubbels from a counter-attack gave the eastern Swiss side a 2-0 lead in the first 30 minutes. Lucerne, who were knocked out of the Cup against lower-ranked Aarau last weekend, showed morale in the second half and earned their first win in St. Gallen since July 2019. The Central Swiss side climbed to the top of the table thanks to their fourth win in the last five games.

Son of Lucerne coach Frick spies on St. Gallen training session

Curious story in the run-up to today's match in St. Gallen: A young man films the FCSG training session on Thursday. It's not just any fan, but the son of Mario Frick, the coach of today's St.Gallen opponent.

Ten years ago, Yanik Frick was still playing for FC St.Gallen's youth team. On Thursday, the 26-year-old will be back at the Espen training ground. However, the 30-time Liechtenstein international is not there to meet up with old friends. But to film the FCSG training session. "Hidden behind a fence", as the Blick writes.

Frick is said to have commissioned his son to film the tactical exercises of the team from Eastern Switzerland. The fact that Frick junior was recognized is "unfortunate", says the FCL coach. But that's part of the business. "We've also sent people to public training sessions on other occasions to get a better picture of our opponents," admits Mario Frick. Will the espionage pay off for the FCL?
