Steffen Baumgart conceded defeat on his debut as head coach of Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin. In a test match against league rivals Holstein Kiel, the Köpenickers were somewhat unlucky to lose 2-1 (1-1).
"I saw a good game - with high intensity and chances to score," said Baumgart after the match. "From my point of view, it wasn't the right result. That's the downer. But I saw a lot of what I want to see."
The match in front of 9,035 spectators at the An der Alten Försterei stadium was played over four 30-minute periods. The sides were changed after 60 minutes. The goals for Kiel were scored by Armin Gigovic (34th minute) and Fiete Arp (114th).
Bundesliga continues next weekend
Yorbe Vertessen (97') equalized for the Berliners with a remarkable move. The Iron had several good opportunities in the second 60 minutes in particular.
Baumgart played with a back four. Goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow and attacker Ivan Prtajin had to miss the game through injury. Union will travel to 1. FC Heidenheim next Saturday to kick off the second half of the season. Kiel also have to face SC Freiburg on Saturday.
