Video highlights St. Gallen miss chance after chance and have to settle for a point

FC St. Gallen make too little of their superiority in their Conference League home game against Backa Topola and have to settle for a 2-2 draw.

St. Gallen coach Enrico Maassen had called for more determination and efficiency after the goalless draw against Yverdon at the weekend. St. Gallen were direct and determined against the Serbian visitors, but failed to make the most of their chances. There should have been more from the many good moves than just the goals from Moustapha Cissé to make it 1:0 (31') and Corsin Konietzke to make it 2:2 (65').

At the other end, Backa Topola, who had dispatched Lugano 4:1 at home three weeks ago, turned almost every scoring chance into a goal. As against Lugano, Milos Pantovic scored twice. Both times, in the 40th and 53rd minute, the Serbian league's tenth-placed player simply played his way through the St. Gallen defense. Backa Topola almost struck again in the closing stages, but goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made two strong saves against Aleksandar Cirkovic.

Still in the race

The visitors' good opportunities towards the end did not outweigh the chances that St. Gallen carved out for themselves, including a shot on the post from Christian Witzig, who was always dangerous until his substitution. Despite their lack of efficiency, the Grünweiss offense was also impressive in the absence of the injured Willem Geubbels. Cissé scored his first goal in almost four months and 18-year-old Konietzke his first goal in his 21st match as a professional.

At least the 2-2 draw keeps FCSG in the race for a place in the round of 16. However, he will have to score in the last two rounds on December 12 and 19. The tasks will be no easier than on Thursday evening. The Portuguese side Guimarães await away and Bundesliga side Heidenheim at home.
