Liverpool FC are making great strides at the top of the Premier League table. Klopp's successor Arne Slot's team also won easily at West Ham.
Leaders Liverpool cemented their lead at the top of the table with a seemingly effortless 5-0 win at West Ham United. Mohamed Salah was once again the outstanding figure for the Reds. The Egyptian, whose contract expires at the end of the season, set up goals 2 and 5 in brilliant technical fashion and scored himself before the break to make it 3-0. After 18 rounds, Salah now has 17 goals and 13 assists.
Shortly before that, Manchester City had halted their negative streak in the last game of the year. After squandering the lead against Everton (1:1) on St. Stephen's Day and only one win from 13 competitive games, things finally worked out again on Sunday against 18th-placed Leicester City. Savinho put the visitors ahead in the 21st minute with his first goal for the Citizens, and Erling Haaland headed in Savinho's cross to make it 2-0 with a quarter of an hour to go after four games without a goal of his own.
In the 500th game under coach Pep Guardiola, Manchester City did not shine, but did not make any serious mistakes as has often been the case in recent weeks. "Hopefully the result will help us get back on our feet. We needed it, all of us. It wasn't an ideal performance, but we'll take it," said Pep Guardiola after the game.
Manuel Akanji was still in the starting eleven three days after being partially at fault for the goal conceded against Everton and played a key role in ensuring his team remained unscathed. The Swiss defender thwarted one of Leicester's best chances to equalize through James Justin on the hour mark.
With their second league win since the end of October, City climbed to 5th place, at least for 24 hours. Six points further ahead are newly-rich Nottingham Forest, who recorded their fifth win in a row at Everton (2-0) and are now second.
