Two heavy home defeats have dented Real Madrid's ego. The Champions League winners responded with a show of strength. One player stands out. Injuries are a concern.
Led by treble scorer Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid ended their brief crisis after two heavy home defeats. In the top game of matchday 13, coach Carlo Ancelotti's team outclassed fifth-placed CA Osasuna 4-0 (2-0) at home in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and successfully defended second place in the Spanish football championship.
Vinícius (34th minute) gave Real the lead. Ex-Dortmund player Jude Bellingham (42) scored his first goal of the season in the Primera División with a sensitive lob over visiting goalkeeper Sergio Herrera. Star striker Vinícius scored twice more in the 61st and 69th minutes.
Champions League winners Real had recently lost two games in a row. After losing 4-0 to league leaders FC Barcelona under coach Hansi Flick, the defending champions suffered their next defeat in the top flight with a 3-1 loss to AC Milan. This was followed by speculation about Ancelotti's future. The position of the Italian, who still has a contract until 2026, should now be more secure.
Three injuries in one half
The success was overshadowed by the probably serious injury to Éder Militão. The Brazilian defender went down in the visitors' penalty area without any opponent input, holding his right knee and screaming in pain. After initial treatment, he was stretchered off the pitch after just under half an hour with his shirt pulled over his face. Éder Militão had already missed most of the previous season due to a cruciate ligament rupture.
Before that, his compatriot Rodrygo had to be substituted due to a thigh ligament injury. Defender Lucas Vázquez did not return to the pitch for the second half either, having also received treatment on his thigh during the first half.
