The absence of head coach Hansi Flick and attacking star Lamine Yamal is initially not noticeable for FC Barcelona in the top match against Atlético Madrid. But the squandered chances paid off.
Without suspended head coach Hansi Flick, FC Barcelona suffered another setback in the top match of the Spanish Primera División against Atlético Madrid and lost the lead in the table. Barça initially dominated and deservedly led 1-0 thanks to Pedri's goal (30 minutes), but Rodrigo de Paul (60 minutes) and ex-Leipzig player Alexander Sörloth (90.+6) turned the game around to give Atlético a flattering 2-1 (0-1) victory.
The Catalans (38 points), who missed several great chances, had to surrender the lead in the table to Atlético (41). The new leaders have also played one game less. Champions Real Madrid (37) host Sevilla FC this Sunday and can knock Barça out of second place with a win.
Absence of attacking star Yamal hardly noticeable
Flick, who had described Atlético as the "best team in the league at the moment" before the game, was once again replaced on the touchline by assistant Marcus Sorg. The former national team coach had been suspended for two games following his red card in the 2-2 away draw against Betis Sevilla. Flick was already unable to coach his team last weekend in the 1-0 defeat against CD Leganés.
Barcelona's offense was very present for a long time against defensively strong Atlético, despite the absence of young star Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old winger suffered a ligament injury against Leganés after a blow to his right ankle and is expected to be out for another two to three weeks.
