Young Boys clearly lose their first game in the Champions League phase. Coach Patrick Rahmen's team lost 3-0 to Aston Villa in the Wankdorf.
The result was clear in the end. Young Boys got off to a brisk start and were the more dangerous team in the opening phase. However, two hair-raising mistakes cost the Bernese side their deserved reward and put them on the road to defeat.
The Swiss champions made their first blunder in the 27th minute when they failed to deal with a corner. Youri Tielemans received the ball completely unmarked, took it without any time pressure and scored the opening goal for England with a well-placed shot.
Camara's gift
Aston Villa then made the most of their speed and repeatedly produced dangerous moves down the left flank. One of these led to 0:2 in the 38th minute, although the danger seemed to have been averted when Mohamed Ali Camara got to the ball. However, the defender lost track of the ball and played a completely unnecessary back pass to goalkeeper David von Ballmoos. Ollie Watkins intervened and was cleared by the YB goalkeeper. Jacob Ramsey then only had to slot the ball into the empty goal.
The video assistant saved the Bernese from an even clearer result. In the run-up to the supposed 0:3 through Watkins shortly before the break and Jhon Duran's goal ten minutes before the end, the hand of an Englishman was in play in both cases, which is why neither goal counted.

Villa fans prepare for YB game - ex-star dances on the table in the pub
Numerous Aston Villa fans traveled to Bern the day before the game and toasted their first Champions League match on Monday evening. Among them was Ian Taylor, an ex-player of the traditional English club, as several fans recorded in the form of videos on the "X" platform.
On Tuesday afternoon, the English fans made their presence felt in Bern's city center.
Other supporters are already practicing the Champions League anthem. As a reminder, Aston Villa have won the Champions Cup once (1982), but have never been represented in Europe's top division since changing their name to the Champions League.
Meanwhile, still others are surprised to see bears in the middle of the Swiss capital. "I don't think many people know anything about these bears just chilling here in Bern," writes one fan on "X".
Meanwhile, the English club's official channel is apparently touring the city and posting numerous videos from idyllic Bern.

What Fabian Frei and Admir Mehmedi think YB can do
In the football talk Heimspiel, Admir Mehmedi, Fabian Frei and blue Sport editor-in-chief Andreas Böni talk about YB's chances in the Champions League. However, he doesn't believe that YB has no chance either: "Especially in the home games with the artificial turf, with the crowd, I can see one or two points being possible."

The new Champions League mode briefly explained
How the new Champions League mode works
- 36 teams are part of the new Champions League mode.
- In a so-called league phase, consisting of eight games per team, all 36 clubs are listed in a table.
- The eight matches in the league phase are played against different opponents. The teams are divided into pots beforehand. Each team has to play against two teams per pot.
- The first eight teams from the league phase advance to the round of 16.
- The remaining places in the round of 16 are awarded in knockout playoffs. A team ranked 9th to 16th will face a team ranked 17th to 24th, with a first and second leg deciding who progresses.
- The losers of the knockout playoffs and clubs ranked 25 to 36 are eliminated from the Champions League. There is no ticket for the Europa League.
- From the round of 16 onwards, the familiar tournament format is used. First and second legs between two teams up to and including the semi-finals. The Champions League winner will be crowned in a final match.
