Mexico's footballers lose the quarter-final first leg in Honduras. After the game, coach Javier Aguirre is thrown at and hit on the head. He leaves the pitch bleeding. The association is now investigating.
Mexican football coach Javier Aguirre was thrown at and hit on the head by spectators during the Nations League match in Honduras. An object, apparently a beer can, hit the 65-year-old immediately after the final whistle of the quarter-final first leg. Honduras had won the game 2:0 (0:0).
Unperturbed and bleeding profusely, Aguirre first went to his Honduran counterpart after the goal and then walked off the pitch, accompanied by support and security staff. At the post-match press conference, Aguirre said it was nothing, it was just football.
Association launches investigation
The North and Central American Football Association later announced that it strongly condemned the incident and the violence that took place after the final whistle of the match. The incident will now be forwarded to the Concacaf disciplinary committee for further examination and investigation.
The Mexican federation said it had "taken the appropriate precautions through official channels to request Concacaf to act in accordance with the regulations following tonight's events".
After Luis Palma's two goals (64th and 79th minute), Honduras are in a good sporting position going into the second leg. This will take place on Tuesday night in Toluca, Mexico.
Aguirre to lead Mexico to the 2026 World Cup
Aguirre has been national coach of his home country for the third time since July and is set to lead Mexico to their third World Cup after 2002 and 2010. Mexico will co-host the tournament with the USA and Canada in 2026.
