Next setback Third defeat in a row: Manchester City also lose to Aston Villa

Series champions Manchester City simply cannot stop their losing streak. The next defeat comes at Aston Villa.

The sporting crisis at Pep Guardiola's Manchester City is taking on ever greater proportions. The 1:2 (0:1) in the Premier League match at Aston Villa was the English champions' ninth defeat in the last twelve games. The Cityzens have won just one competitive game since the end of October and are slipping further and further towards mediocrity in the league.

At Aston Villa, coach superstar Guardiola's team once again put in an uninspiring performance without any offensive punch. Top goalscorer Erling Haaland did not get into the game and veteran Ilkay Gündogan was unable to provide any impetus. Goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who was preferred to Ederson this time, was powerless to prevent Jhon Durán (16 minutes) and Morgan Rogers (65 minutes) from scoring and even worse. Phil Foden's follow-up goal (90.+3) came too late.

The deficit grows

Villa moved past Manchester City in the table with 28 points. Guardiola's charges remain on 27 points after 17 league games and are already nine points behind leaders Liverpool FC, who have also played two games less.

After the recent 2-1 defeat in the city derby against Manchester United, Guardiola took responsibility for the astonishing slump. "I am the boss, I am the manager and I am not good enough," said the coach of the struggling serial champions. "I have to find solutions and I haven't managed to do that so far. That's the reality," added the Spaniard. He had only recently extended his contract at City until the summer of 2027.
