FC Lugano lost the Europa League play-off second leg against Besiktas Istanbul 1:5, meaning the Ticino side missed out on a place in the Europa League after a 3:3 draw in the first leg, but are still in the Conference League.
After the 3:3 in the first leg, the Ticino side wanted to follow in the footsteps of Young Boys and outplay the favorites in Istanbul. But unlike the Bernese, Lugano fell behind early on. In the 7th minute, Ciro Immobile, the Italian top striker, was on hand to head home a rebound from goalkeeper Amir Saipi.
The visitors from Ticino proved a year ago at the same venue that they are capable of reacting to setbacks. In October, they even turned a 2-0 deficit against Besiktas into a 3-2 victory. Lugano showed a reaction this time too and equalized through Shkelqim Vladi. However, Besiktas responded promptly and fiercely. With three goals between the 65th and 71st minute, they decided the duel.
Lugano had started in the Champions League qualifiers and had already been beaten by Fenerbahce, a team from Istanbul. The victory against Partizan Belgrade was then important, as it secured the Ticino side's European participation. It is the fourth group or league phase after 2017, 2019 (both Europa League) and 2023 (Conference League).
