A controversial Kane penalty is enough for Munich in the evening game at Borussia Mönchengladbach - and thus the early first-round championship. Union's downward trend continues under Steffen Baumgart.

Thanks to a converted penalty from Harry Kane, FC Bayern Munich are early first-round champions in the Bundesliga. The Munich side won 1:0 (0:0) at Borussia Mönchengladbach to move four points clear of double winners Bayer Leverkusen after 16 matchdays.

Goalscorer Harry Kane converted a penalty in the 68th minute, following a controversial foul on Bayern attacker Michael Olise, to secure a deserved victory against a committed but hapless Gladbach side.

Steffen Baumgart's debut as Bundesliga coach of 1. FC Union Berlin was a failure. After the defeat at the DFB sports tribunal during the week, the Köpenickers also lost 0:2 (0:1) at 1. FC Heidenheim at the start of the new football year in the first game under Bo Svensson's successor and thus slipped further and further into the relegation battle.

In the Bundesliga top flight, Eintracht Frankfurt consolidated their third place behind leaders Bayern Munich and champions Leverkusen, who had started the season with a 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund on Friday, with a 1-0 (1-0) win at FC St. Pauli. Behind them, FSV Mainz 05 climbed to fourth place in the Champions League with a 2-0 (1-0) win over bottom club VfL Bochum.

SC Freiburg are also well in contention, in sixth place after beating Holstein Kiel 3:2 (2:0). TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are still struggling under new coach Christian Ilzer and are in acute danger of relegation after losing 1-0 (0-1) to VfL Wolfsburg.

Union winless in ten competitive matches

In Heidenheim, new winter signing Frans Krätzig (17) and Adrian Beck (83) sealed the defeat for the Berliners, who were unable to end their ten-game winless streak under former HSV coach Baumgart. In addition, Union professional Tom Rothe was shown the red card for an emergency brake (37').

With 17 points, the Ironmen are only four points ahead of the relegation places. The gap may be reduced by a further point if the DFB Federal Court confirms the 2-0 defeat at the green table in the scandalous match against VfL Bochum (1-1). Union had lodged an appeal against the DFB sports court's decision.

Star striker Omar Marmoush may have made his farewell present for Eintracht with his goal (32nd) at FC St. Pauli. The Egyptian has been linked with English champions Manchester City. Frankfurt's sporting director has already confirmed that a club has contacted the Hessians about Marmoush. The goalscorer's market value is estimated at 60 million euros.

Bochum still bottom of the league

In Mainz, Jonathan Burkardt (23rd/69th) - a potential replacement for Marmoush in Frankfurt - scored twice for the hosts. VfL thus remain bottom of the table, with Holstein Kiel also in a relegation place. The North Germans' defeat in Freiburg was sealed by an own goal from Nicolai Remberg (23') and goals from Christian Günter (38') and Vincenzo Grifo (74'). The two Kiel goals from Phil Harres (85th/90th) came too late.

In Hoffenheim, Mohamed Amoura gave Wolfsburg three points. This left the hosts without a win in their eighth competitive match in a row under Ilzer. The Austrian, who replaced Pellegrino Matarazzo, had only celebrated a win in his first game in charge.
