- Julian Nagelsmann will remain coach of the German national team beyond the 2026 World Cup. On Friday, the German Football Association (DFB) announced the early contract extension with the 37-year-old, under whom the DFB team has regained its former strength.
- As the German association announced on the fringes of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the DFB in Leipzig, Nagelsmann signed a new contract valid until 2028. Nagelsmann also wants to tackle the 2028 European Championships in Great Britain and Ireland with the DFB team.
The German Football Association (DFB) has some good news to announce ahead of the national team's first international matches of the new year. Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The 37-year-old signed a new contract until 2028 as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the DFB in Leipzig on Friday, as announced by the association.
Nagelsmann also wants to tackle the 2028 European Championships in Great Britain and Ireland with the DFB team. After missing out on the European Championship triumph in Germany last year, the former Bundesliga coach has set himself the clear goal of winning trophies during his extended tenure.
"I could not have imagined ..."
"In September 2023, when I joined the DFB, I couldn't have imagined being national coach beyond the home European Championships," Nagelsmann said in the association's statement on the contract extension.
"Our big goal was a successful tournament. At the time, I couldn't have imagined what the national team meant to the people of Germany. How many hearts it reaches and moves. This great feedback that we all receive every day, not just me, shows us that we are on the right path together," added Nagelsmann. And it's not over yet: "We want to win titles together."
2024 only lost to Spain
For national team director Rudi Völler, Nagelsmann's long-term commitment has fulfilled a special wish. Over the past 16 months, the young coach has "inspired fans and players alike with his infectious enthusiasm for the common goals". He has built up a unit again. "That is necessary for success."
After a difficult initial phase, the DFB team is once again among the European leaders, with Nagelsmann winning eleven of his 19 international matches as national coach. There was only one defeat in 2024. In the quarter-finals of the home European Championship, the DFB team lost 2:1 to Spain after extra time.
The DFB team will not play international matches again until March. Then they will face Italy in the Nations League quarter-finals for a place in the Final Four tournament, which would be held in Germany if they are successful. The second major sporting goal is to successfully qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
