Although captain Jonas Omlin is back in training at Gladbach, coach Gerardo Seoane is still relying on the current substitute Moritz Nicolas.
Moritz Nicolas will remain Borussia Mönchengladbach's first-choice goalkeeper after the international break. Coach Gerardo Seoane has decided to stick with Nicolas despite the return of captain Jonas Omlin to team training. Seoane explained: "Mo has performed consistently well in recent weeks and has earned this through his performances. Jonas was often absent last year due to several injuries, so he has to get back to 100 percent first."
Omlin, who recently had to take a break due to a tendon injury, was successfully deputized for by Nicolas (26) during his absence. Since moving to Mönchengladbach in January 2023, the 30-year-old Omlin has missed 41 of a possible 69 competitive matches.
Nicolas' rise to number one
The decision to keep Nicolas as first choice in goal is based on his consistent performance in recent weeks. Seoane emphasized that Nicolas has earned this position through his strong performances. Omlin's repeated injuries over the past year have affected his fitness, leading to the current decision.
Omlin's injury woes
Jonas Omlin, who joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2023, has missed the majority of games due to injury. His latest tendon injury forced him to take another lengthy break, during which Nicolas made the most of his opportunity and proved to be a reliable goalkeeper. Seoane emphasized that Omlin must first be fully fit again before he can return to the starting eleven.
Nati coach Murat Yakin also did without Omlin recently. He nominated Gregor Kobel, Yvon Mvogo and Pascal Loretz for the upcoming Nations League games (the FCL goalkeeper had to withdraw due to injury, however, which is why David von Ballmoos was called up).
