New coach, old picture GC wakes up too late, loses to St. Gallen and remains bottom of the table

In the crisis duel between Grasshoppers and FC St. Gallen, the eastern Swiss emerge victorious. Two corner kicks make the 2:1 victory possible.

Three days after winning the European Cup in Northern Ireland against Larne, FC St. Gallen followed it up in the championship, putting a definitive end to the poor phase of recent weeks with no wins in October.

In the first match after the dismissal of coach Marco Schällibaum, GC was a welcome opponent for St. Gallen. In front of Peter Zeidler, who is being touted as a top candidate for the vacant coaching position at the Hoppers, the Zurich side did little for a long time. The hosts only had their first good scoring chances after going 2-0 down. Giotto Morandi made it 1-2 in the 82nd minute. In stoppage time, St. Gallen keeper Lawrence Ati Zigi had to save a free kick from Morandi.

St. Gallen, who were in command for a good hour, struck twice after a Christian Witzig corner, in the 26th minute through Abdoulaye Diaby and after an hour through Lukas Görtler, who had already scored on Thursday.

Because Winterthur won on Saturday, GC go into the international break at the bottom of the table. The record champions have not won since the 1-0 defeat at Young Boys at the end of September.
