Didier Deschamps has been France's national coach since 2012. The team celebrated great successes under him. The era will soon end.
World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps will end his involvement with the French national team after the 2026 World Cup. The 56-year-old made the announcement in an interview with broadcaster LCI. His role with the national team will then come to an end because it has to end at some point, said Deschamps, referring to his contract, which expires in 2026.
"I've done my time," added Deschamps, who has been the French national team coach since 2012. He wants to stop while the going is good. He does not yet know what will follow. Under his leadership, France won the 2018 World Cup title and finished runners-up in the 2022 World Cup. He also reached the final of the 2016 European Championship at home with the Équipe Tricolore.
Head of the association Philippe Diallo praised the long-serving coach as the "greatest coach of the French national team". In the sports magazine "L'Équipe", the FFF boss said: "I think Didier Deschamps' career has been exceptional, marked by the most prestigious titles." Diallo denied the question of whether the announcement would lead to a loss of authority for Deschamps. "On the contrary, it will liberate everyone." The situation will become clearer.
