Basel win the prestigious duel against Young Boys 1:0 and plunge the champions further into misery at the bottom of the table.
When Xherdan Shaqiri puts the ball down, an expectant murmur usually goes through the rows of spectators in Basel. This was also the case in the 52nd minute of the former top-of-the-table clash between FCB and Young Boys. And Shaqiri's cross actually finds the head of Adrian Barisic, who leaps higher than Joël Monteiro from Bern and heads in to make it 1:0.
The fact that such a move decides this prestigious duel says a lot about the state of two teams who have yet to find their feet in this Super League season. On the one hand, Basel, who have only picked up one point from their last three games, and on the other, Bern, who have only managed to record one full win against relegation candidates Winterthur.
Unsurprisingly, the 28,463 spectators at St.-Jakob-Park were not treated to a celebration of beautiful football, but rather a game characterized by caution.
Young Boys, who had suffered a lesson in the Champions League at FC Barcelona during the week, were particularly keen to make an offensive impact in the opening stages. Ugrinic, for example, hit the post after a quarter of an hour.
However, Bern's attempt to put on an active display in Basel was severely curtailed in the 40th minute when Sandro Lauper was sent off with a straight red card for the second time in his career after a tackle on Benie Traoré.
With a superior number of players, FCB rarely struggled to control the game. Kevin Carlos, Yverdon's new hope in attack, narrowly missed the second goal with a header against the crossbar after an hour. Mohamed Ali Camara, the Bernese defender, forced Marwin Hitz in the Basel goal to make a save ten minutes before the end. Joël Monteiro wasted a ball in the penalty area in stoppage time. These are flashes in the pan for a struggling champions who do not give the impression that they will soon find a way out of the crisis.
The votes
⭐️ Man of the Match: Adrian Barisic (Basel)
The central defender scores his first Super League goal to give FC Basel an ultra-important win against BSC YB. Doesn't concede a goal at the back either.
