Monaco, the club of Swiss players Philipp Köhn, Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria, is in a veritable slump. Embolo made the decisive mistake in the 2-1 defeat against bottom club Montpellier.

Embolo lost the ball to his national team colleague Becir Omeragic just a few minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 77th minute. Montpellier's Musa al-Taamari converted the ensuing counter-attack with his second goal to win the game. After half an hour, Monaco's stand-in captain Thilo Kehrer had given the visitors a comfortable lead.

Kehrer wore the captain's armband for Denis Zakaria, whose absence due to illness was painfully noticeable, as it had been in the Cup defeat to Reims. Goalkeeper Köhn followed the action from the substitutes' bench.

It was Monaco's fourth winless league game in a row. Since the end of November, there have only been two wins in all competitions. They have also suffered two defeats in the Champions League recently. With just two points from their last four games, Monegasque could be out of the Champions League places after the 18th round of Ligue 1. Their next opponents are Rennes in a week's time.
