No winner in Bundesliga thriller Bayern only get a 1-1 draw against Leverkusen despite superiority

Bayer Leverkusen take the first points from Bayern Munich in the top match of the 5th Bundesliga round. The champions drew a flattering 1-1 in Munich.

Robert Andrich gave the visitors the lead after half an hour with a long-range shot, against the run of play and following a pass from Granit Xhaka. Eight minutes later, Bayern's youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic equalized with a dream goal from an even greater distance that was perhaps not entirely unstoppable.

Bayern Munich thus stayed top of the table, but remained without a win for the first time this season after their resounding victories at Holstein Kiel (6-1) and Werder Bremen (5-0) and their 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. Serge Gnabry missed the chance to make it 2-1 for Bayern in the second half when he hit the post and crossbar in quick succession. As a result, there are still three points between the two presumably strongest teams in the league.

The double winners from Leverkusen were better able to live with the point than Munich, who dominated the intense game for long stretches but failed to score another goal despite 18-3 shots on goal and almost 70% possession. "We're happy to take the 1:1," said Xhaka on Sky. Defensively, it was a "very good" performance from his team, but they were self-critical. "The aim was to concede little. You can do a bit more with the ball," said the Swiss team leader.
