Fan scandal and game interruption Atlético snatch a late draw in heated Madrid derby against Real

Real Madrid miss out on a prestigious win against city rivals Atlético in stoppage time. Even though the derby against Atlético is not particularly heated, there is a lengthy interruption.

Real Madrid squandered a prestigious victory in the city derby against Atlético in stoppage time. The Spanish record champions looked like certain winners for a long time at the Metropolitano thanks to a goal from Éder Militão (64th minute). However, Ángel Correa equalized for Atlético in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Both teams remain unbeaten in the Spanish top division, but it was a setback for Real. A win would have taken the Whites to within one point of leaders FC Barcelona.

The game had to be interrupted for a quarter of an hour midway through the second half due to the heated atmosphere in the stands, with referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer even sending both teams to the dressing room. Lighters had been thrown onto the pitch from the stands. Apparently the Atlético fans felt provoked by Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who had exuberantly celebrated the opening goal in front of the opposing supporters.

For Atlético midfielder Antoine Griezmann (33), there was another reason to celebrate in addition to the late point. The French international played his 500th game in Spain's top division against Real.

Real without Mbappé

Real were without their star striker Kylian Mbappé. The 25-year-old Frenchman suffered a muscle injury to his left thigh in the 3:2 nail-biting win against Deportivo Alavés. Real did not give an exact time of absence, but Spanish media reported that the World Cup top scorer was facing a three-week break.
