Vinícius and Mbappé score Aluminum luck and penalty goals: Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad

After Barcelona's excellent start to the new La Liga season, champions Real Madrid were already under pressure in San Sebastián. Although the Whites had to make three lucky saves at Real Sociedad, they won thanks to two penalty goals.

Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior gave Real Madrid a successful dress rehearsal for their Champions League match against VfB Stuttgart. The two top stars led the Spanish record champions to a 2-0 win in the away league game at Real Sociedad San Sebastián, each converting a penalty.

Real are second in the table, one point behind FC Barcelona, who are coached by Hansi Flick and play FC Girona this Sunday (4.15pm).

First, Brazilian Vinícius Júnior scored after a handball in the penalty area to make it 1-0 (58'). Frenchman Mbappé then had a great chance to make it 2-0 from the spot (75') after Vinícius was fouled in the penalty area. According to data provider Opta, it was the first time since 2019 that two different Real professionals had converted two penalties in a league match. Madrid were also lucky, however, because San Sebastián hit the aluminum three times.

Real will host German runners-up VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday (9 p.m.) to kick off the new Champions League season. The Swabians also gained new self-confidence with their 3:1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
