- FC Barcelona win the Spanish Supercup in furious fashion. The team of German coach Hansi Flick defeated Real Madrid 5:2 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
- After the Madrilenians took the lead in the 5th minute through Kylian Mbappé, Barcelona put on a great show. The 17-year-old Lamine Yamal after a dribble (22'), Robert Lewandowski with a penalty (36'), Raphinha with a header (39') and Alejandro Balde after a counter-attack in stoppage time of the first half gave the unleashed Catalans a 4:1 lead before the break. Shortly after the restart, Raphinha again increased the lead to 5:1 (48').
- Real were unable to do more than make it 2-5 through Rodrygo (60') after Wojciech Szczesny was shown a red card (56'), meaning Barcelona won the Super Cup for the 15th time.
FC Barcelona stormed to their first title under coach Hansi Flick with dream goals in a memorable Clásico. In the Supercopa final, the Catalans humiliated defending champions and arch-rivals Real Madrid 5:2 (4:1). Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha twice and Alex Balde made Barcelona's gala and 15th Supercopa title perfect.
After going 1-0 down early on thanks to a world-class goal from superstar Kylian Mbappé in the fifth minute, Flick's team got off to a flying start without European champion Dani Olmo, who was eligible to play again. Led by the super-talented Yamal, the Catalans turned the game around at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - and how! "Barça sweep Madrid off the pitch", wrote As. "I'm sad, like all the fans. It was a tough evening," said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Yamal opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a superb strike when he denied Real keeper Thibaut Courtois from 16 meters. Robert Lewandowski (36) gave Barça the lead with a penalty before Raphinha (39) increased the lead with a header from eleven meters after a dream pass from Jules Koundé.
But that was not enough. With Mbappé receiving treatment on the pitch and his left ankle bandaged after a tackle, there was a long period of stoppage time - to the delight of the Barcelona fans. Balde (45.+10) made it 4:1 before the break after a picture-book counter-attack.
The Olmo pre-match
Club president Joan Laporta, sitting in an armchair in the VIP box, was also delighted - unlike his Real counterpart Florentino Pérez. In the days leading up to the game, Laporta had been at the center of attention as he tried to get Olmo and his team-mate Pau Víctor cleared to play.
The league and the association had refused them both. The reason for this was the financial situation of the heavily indebted Catalans and the economic guidelines in Spain. In the end, a ruling by the Supreme Sports Council meant that both were registered in time for the final, albeit provisionally.
Spectacle without end: emergency stop by the Barça keeper against Mbappé
Barcelona continued to work their magic after the break. Once again, it was the equally outstanding Raphinha (48') who outwitted the Real defense.
As if the spectacle wasn't enough, Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off with a red card after an emergency stop against Mbappé, with substitute keeper Iñaki Peña stepping in.
Peña got his fingers to Rodryko's subsequent free-kick, but was unable to keep it out: 2:5 from Real's perspective after 61 minutes. Olmo had been substituted shortly beforehand. Meanwhile, star coach Carlo Ancelotti brought on former world footballer Luka Modric, but even he was unable to avert the ignominy against a Barcelona side who played like they were in a frenzy at times. "It's a sign of how we want to play now and in the future," emphasized centre-forward Lewandowski.
Barcelona had already won the first clash in LaLiga this season by a clear 4-0 margin. Nevertheless, they are five points behind Real in the championship.
