Elisa Gasparin is ending her biathlon career at the end of the season at the age of 33. The Engadin native announced this on Tuesday.
The younger sister of Selina Gasparin and older sister of Aita Gasparin is the most experienced Swiss biathlete still active. During her 15 seasons in the World Cup, she has taken part in two Olympic Games, and in February she will be competing in her eleventh World Championships in Lenzerheide, where she lives.
"From training on a simple target in a cow pasture to the upcoming World Championships on my own doorstep: I was able to experience an incredible journey. I am proud to have been a part of this development and will leave the biathlon stage in March at the World Cup final in Oslo with a smile and a tear in my eye," said Gasparin in the Swiss-Ski press release.
Elisa Gasparin won silver in the pursuit and bronze in the sprint at the Junior World Championships in 2012. She celebrated her greatest successes at elite level with the team. In 2019/20, she was part of the team responsible for the first three World Cup podium finishes of a Swiss women's relay team - in each case as the starting skier. In 2022, she won bronze at the European Championships with the mixed relay team, with whom she also secured the first Swiss podium finish in the World Cup. She was denied a podium place in the singles, but she did make it into the diploma ranks twice as a soloist at the Olympic Games.
