Instead of retiring after the 2026 Olympic Games as planned, biathlon superstar Johannes Thingnes Bö will retire after this World Cup winter.
The record-breaking world champion announced this surprising decision at the World Cup in Ruhpolding.
The five-time overall World Cup winner will complete his last race in March at his home race on the Holmenkollen in Oslo. He has "the feeling that the time has come to prioritize family," the father of two wrote on Instagram.
"Over the past six seasons, I've managed to juggle top-class sport and family life. It's been fantastic, but also very challenging," explained the 31-year-old Norwegian. "I had originally planned to continue for another year, but preparing for the Olympic Games demands even more from me and the people around me."
Bö made his World Cup debut in 2013. In his career, he has won five Olympic victories and 20 World Championship gold medals. Only compatriot Ole Einar Björndalen can keep up with the exceptional athlete from Stryn in terms of the number of World Championship titles. Bö has also won 79 World Cups and a total of 88 career victories. Only Björndalen is ahead of him in these statistics with a total of 95 successes.
