The 30-year-old Rüesch has never before finished in the top ten in an individual competition at the highest level. His personal best was 15th place, which he achieved eight years ago in a 15 km race in Ulricehamn, Sweden, also using the skating technique.

In Les Rousses, where several top athletes decided not to compete, the Norwegians once again set the tone. The 24-year-old Iver Andersen took his second World Cup victory ahead of his compatriot Paal Golberg. The podium was completed by the American Ben Ogden. Rüesch lost 30 seconds to Andersen.

Anniversary victory for Jessie Diggins

Cross-country skiing. - American Jessie Diggins triumphed in the women's race, finishing ahead of Germany's Victoria Carl and Norway's Astrid Öyre Slind. With her fourth win of the season, the world champion from the USA has reached the mark of 25 individual victories in the World Cup. Marina Kälin was responsible for the best Swiss result. In 24th place, the 21-year-old from the Engadine lost a good one and a half minutes to Diggins. Giuliana Werro finished 29th, Nadja Kälin gave up the race after about two thirds of the distance.

Biathlon relay team outside the top 10

Biathlon. - Unsurprisingly, the Swiss men's relay team, which was not at its best, was unable to finish in the top 10 at the World Cup in Ruhpolding. The quartet of James Pacal, Joscha Burkhalter, Jeremy Finello and Sebastian Stalder finished in 11th place. Team leader Niklas Hartweg was spared for Sunday's mass start race after his 4th place in the individual race. The French also emerged victorious in the third relay race of this winter. Behind world champions Sweden, the German team also made it onto the podium, much to the delight of the spectators. The Norwegians, on the other hand, missed out on the top 3 for the first time in three years in fourth place.
