Baseball legend Pete Rose has died in Nevada at the age of 83.

Pete Rose managed 4256 hits in Major League Baseball (MLB) - more than anyone else. Rose played in the MLB for 24 years, 18 of them for the Cincinnati Reds. He made it to the All-Star Game 17 times and was champion three times. He was invited to the White House several times, and US President Ronald Reagan personally congratulated him on his batting record. But Pete Rose also spent five months in prison for filing false tax returns.

For allegedly betting on baseball games - Rose always denied the accusation that he had ever bet against his own team - he was banned for life by the MLB in 1989. This ban did not force him to retire, as Rose had already stopped playing in the Major Leagues two years earlier, but it prevented him from being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The fact that Pete Rose was never inducted into the Hall of Fame is still a big issue in the USA almost 40 years after the end of his career.
