Swiss epee fencer Ian Hauri achieves an exploit at the Grand Prix in Budapest. The 22-year-old from Geneva was only beaten in the final by Masaru Yamada from Japan.
On his way to the final, Hauri defeated the Hungarian world number two Gergely Siklosi 15:10 in the quarter-finals and beat the Egyptian Mohamed Elsayed, the world number 3, 15:11 in the semi-finals. He lost 10:15 to Yamada, the 2020 Olympic team champion with Japan, after leading 7:5. The 30-year-old Asian had already triumphed at the 2020 Grand Prix in Budapest.
Hauri's best ranking in the World Cup is 15th place. However, he made a name for himself last year when he surprisingly won the bronze medal at the home European Championships in Basel.
