Simon Ehammer misses out on a medal in the long jump at the Olympic Games in Paris. The 24-year-old from Appenzell is 14 centimeters short of bronze.
With his second attempt, Ehammer achieves a distance of 8.20 meters. Although this is a significant improvement on his qualifying mark (8.09 meters), he is still a long way off his personal best and the Swiss record (8.45 meters).
Ehammer, who had sacrificed the decathlon in order to compete in the long jump, did not have an optimal jump on his best attempt. A margin of almost 15 centimeters prevented an even better result and the first Swiss medal in athletics at the Olympic Games since Werner Günthör in Seoul in 1988.
Top favorite Miltiadis Tentoglou from Greece wins ahead of the Jamaican Wayne Pinnock and Mattia Furlani from Italy. Tentoglou, now double Olympic and world champion, secured the gold medal with a distance of 8.48 meters. He jumps 12 and 14 centimeters further than Pinnock and Furlani respectively.
