It is not advisable to completely unplug all electronic devices.
In most cases, nothing worse happens, but there is a risk of permanent damage.
Many consumers know that standby mode on electrical appliances consumes electricity. It is therefore a good idea to unplug appliances if they are not going to be used for a long period of time. However, whether this measure is advisable depends heavily on the type of appliance. Some electrical appliances could be damaged if they are disconnected from the power supply abruptly. This is either due to the way they work or the way they are programmed. We tell you which three devices are best left plugged in at all times.
Inkjet printers
Inkjet printers are hardly significant in terms of power consumption. This alone makes unplugging them unnecessary. However, there is another danger lurking if the device is completely disconnected from the power supply. If an inkjet printer is not switched off using the regular switch-off button, the print head remains in its current position and is not shut down properly.
The result is similar to a reset: the next time it is switched on, the device believes that the print head has not been used for a long time and starts a cleaning process. This consumes an unnecessary amount of ink and causes additional costs in the long term.
OLED TV
Modern televisions, especially OLED devices, also react sensitively to an abrupt disconnection from the power supply. OLED televisions regularly update their pixels in the background to ensure optimum picture quality. If this process is interrupted by pulling the plug, this can lead to permanent damage or a deterioration in picture quality.
It is therefore advisable to ask the manufacturer in advance whether the device should be switched off using the power button or whether it is safe to disconnect it from the mains.
WLAN router
WLAN routers provide the household with a continuous supply of Internet. As this is not needed at night, the idea of disconnecting the router from the mains at night is an obvious one. However, this can lead to malfunctions, especially if important devices such as cell phones or smart home applications are connected to it. Some of these devices do not work smoothly immediately after reconnecting the router and then have to be reconfigured or reinstalled.
