  • 38-year-old Miki Sudo won the women's competition and set a new record with 51 hot dogs.
  • Patrick Bertoletti won the men's competition with 58 hot dogs, as record holder Joey Chestnut was unable to take part.
  • In addition to the eating competitions, there was also a lemonade drinking contest and a donation of 100,000 hotdogs to the food bank in New York.

The "Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest" is a US tradition that has been taking place since 1916. Every year on July 4th, onlookers and eating professionals gather on Coney Island in New York State.

Once again, the participants stuffed themselves with hot dogs to win the prize money of 20,000 dollars - and of course for fame and glory.

The 38-year-old Miki Sudo won the women's competition - and set a new record for female competitors: she polished off 51 hot dogs, leaving second and third place out in the cold. Her direct competitors managed 37 sausages in their bread, while third place managed just 23.

Sudo said after her victory: "Our personal records are just getting better and better, the records are getting higher. After ten years, I can always do more - you can't get rid of me yet!"

The bettor has won every year since 2014 - she only stopped in 2021 due to her pregnancy.

Record holder Chestnut had to sit out

Incidentally, there is a real legend in the men's hot dog eating competition: Joey Chestnut holds the sole record. In 2021, he wolfed down 76 hotdogs. However, he was unable to take part this year as he was contractually prevented from doing so. Chestnut is currently promoting plant-based sausages and will be taking part in a corresponding competition.

So someone else won at Coney Island. Patrick Bertoletti from Chicago ate 58 hot dogs and commented on his victory as follows: "I'm in the greatest country in the world, at the greatest eating contest in the world, and it's perfect, perfection."

With Joey Chestnut sitting out, the competition was fierce and close this year. Second place polished off 53 hot dogs and third place 52.

In addition to the eating contest, there was also musical accompaniment and a lemonade drinking contest. The winner was Eric Booker, who downed a gallon in 21 seconds. One gallon is equivalent to around 3.7 liters.

The tradition also includes a donation: "Nathan's" donated 100,000 hot dogs to the food bank in New York.
