On Monday evening (local time), tens of thousands of households were without power - according to the website poweroutage.us, the states of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia were particularly affected. Schools and public facilities were closed in many places.

Highways were closed due to black ice. According to the New York Times, at least three people were killed in traffic accidents. Thousands of flights were canceled nationwide due to the winter weather - up to 20 centimetres of snow also fell in the US capital Washington and the surrounding region. The majority of flights at the capital's Reagan National Airport were canceled. According to the weather service, the heavy snowfall is now set to end - but sub-zero temperatures are expected to continue in the coming days.
