According to media reports, at least 28 people lost their lives as a result of the storms and tornadoes, twelve of them in the US state of Missouri alone. Dozens of people were injured. In addition, houses and cars were destroyed, trees uprooted and forest fires fanned.

Dust storms caused pile-ups involving dozens of vehicles. Hundreds of thousands of people were without power. The National Weather Service NOAA warned of further storms that are expected to reach the east coast on Sunday. Millions of Americans are on alert.

The storms began on Friday. More than 30 tornadoes were recorded in six states - Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois and Indiana. By way of comparison, according to the German Weather Service, there are an average of around 45 tornadoes per year in Germany.

Tornadoes occur when there are large temperature differences and often occur together with thunderstorms. A trunk-like tube of cloud extends from the thundercloud down to ground level.
