Unknown persons blew up an ATM in Oey in the Bernese Oberland on Monday night. The perpetrators, at least two men in dark clothing, were able to escape.

The police were alerted to two explosions shortly before three o'clock in the morning. The patrols that were deployed found an ATM that had been blown up at the branch of the regional bank AEK on Diemtigtalstrasse, according to the Bern cantonal police.

The ATM was completely destroyed and parts of the building were also damaged. Considerable material damage was caused. Eyewitnesses reported two people to the police. They were on foot and fled in the direction of Latterbach, according to the press release.

With the support of police from neighboring cantons and various special services, the Bern cantonal police launched an extensive manhunt. The affected section of the cantonal road had to be closed for around four and a half hours. The cantonal police are looking for witnesses.

Various incidents in western Switzerland

Several ATMs have been blown up in recent months, particularly in western Switzerland. There have also been incidents in the canton of Bern, for example in Wattenwil at the beginning of July and in Jegenstorf in June.

On September 10, French security forces arrested 13 suspected members of a gang that could be linked to ten ATM blasts in Switzerland.
