Economists had expected this on average. The unemployment rate has not been lower since the introduction of the euro.
In absolute figures, unemployment fell in December by 39,000 month-on-month and by 333,000 year-on-year. The total number of unemployed in the eurozone was 10.82 million.
There are significant differences in unemployment in the individual eurozone countries. The unemployment rate remains particularly high in Spain at 11.2 percent and in Greece at 9.6 percent. Germany has one of the lowest rates at 3.4 percent.
Eurostat calculates harmonized unemployment rates. These are based on definitions that correspond to the recommendations of the International Labor Organization (ILO). They may differ from the national survey methods. As a result, the unemployment rate reported by Eurostat for Germany is significantly lower than the figure reported by the Federal Employment Agency. This agency last reported an unemployment rate of 6.0% for December.
