  • The Brändli bakery and café in Wädenswil ZH will close at the end of August.
  • The traditional bakery opened in 1913 and is now closing after 111 years.
  • Officially, the age of the managers is cited as the reason for the closure.
  • There is already speculation about the successor to the business.

On the last day of August, the last fresh loaves of bread will be sold at the Brändli bakery, marking the end of an era: after 111 years, the traditional bakery with its large café in Wädenswil ZH is coming to an end, as reported by the "Zürichsee-Zeitung".

Silvia Huster Brändli (74) and her son Patrick (38) are closing the store on Bahnhofsplatz near the lake, as "Blick" also confirms, citing a current employee.

The official reason for the closure is the age of the two managers, who were the third generation to run Beck. There is no more detailed information on the closure, but the end of the bakery is currently the topic of conversation in the lakeside community. The traditional bakery opened its doors back in 1913 and will close for good on August 31.

Branch in Zurich city closed shortly after opening

This is what happened to the branch in Zurich in January, which had only just opened. No explanation was given as to why the bakery withdrew from the city so quickly. "We have closed" and "We say thank you!" notices in the shop window informed customers of the rapid closure.

Patrick Huster was still optimistic when the store opened in 2022. "Wiedikon is a trendy district that will attract even more people in the future," he told the Zürichsee-Zeitung newspaper at the time.

New operator found?

And what will happen to the business in Wädenswil? As "Blick" writes, rumors are circulating in the town that a new operator has already been found and is currently looking for staff.

Transparency note: In an earlier version of this article, Wädenswil was referred to as a "village". We have amended the relevant passage.
