Thurgau has paid out the first contributions of 25,000 francs each to victims of drug testing. People who were administered test drugs in psychiatric clinics in the canton of Thurgau between 1940 and 1980 are entitled to these payments.

The first 15 applications for a solidarity contribution had been received by January 9, Thurgau State Archivist André Salathé told the Keystone-SDA news agency. A corresponding law came into force on January 1.

Two of these applications have already been approved and the corresponding payments have been made. The canton is expecting up to 500 beneficiaries or 12.5 million francs.

The psychiatrist responsible for the drug tests at the time was Roland Kuhn, who tested substances not approved for the pharmaceutical industry on patients, some of whom were unsuspecting, at the Münsterlingen psychiatric clinic. As the successor to the companies involved at the time, the Basel-based pharmaceutical group Novartis is contributing CHF 4 million to the solidarity contributions.
