A violent thunderstorm swept over Ticino early Friday morning. Unlike the last weekend in June, however, the damage was limited. There were power cuts in some places.

In an entry on X, MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, reported wind speeds of more than 100 kilometers per hour in southern Ticino.

The area around Lugano and Mendrisiotto were particularly affected. Trees fell onto roads in several places due to strong gusts of wind, as a spokesperson for the Ticino cantonal police told the Keystone-SDA news agency. There were no serious incidents and, as far as is known at present, fortunately no one was injured.

Among other things, a tree blocked the emergency lane on the A2 between Coldrerio and Mendrisio, as the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) wrote on X.

Boat moorings in Riva San Vitale on Lake Lugano were also destroyed, as reported by "Ticino online". Boats were also damaged near Lugano.

In the village of Caneggio in the district of Mendrisio, the power went out at six o'clock, according to police reports. The village of Arzo, which belongs to the municipality of Riva San Vitale, was also without power for the time being. In Meride and Sagno there were only temporary power cuts for around 15 minutes. Shortly after 11 a.m., Radio and Television of Italian-speaking Switzerland (RSI) reported that the power supply had been restored everywhere.

On Thursday, MeteoSwiss had warned of further heavy thunderstorms in Ticino. The warning is valid until Sunday night.
