The situation is unbearable for the locals: party excesses by crowds of tourists are becoming increasingly frequent in Lignano. The Italian seaside resort now wants to pull the emergency brake and partially ban alcohol.

  • Alcoholic corpses and litter on the beaches: the Italian seaside resort of Lignano on the Adriatic coast has had enough of party tourism.
  • The mayor wants to pull the emergency brake and is planning strict rules against excesses.
  • Binge drinking is to be banned and alcohol will only be available to restaurant visitors with a table.

Mass and binge drinking tourism is not only causing increasing resentment on Mallorca. Now the mayor of the popular Italian seaside resort of Lignano is also planning drastic measures.

Lignano is a picturesque village on the Adriatic coast. Cafés, restaurants, unspoiled nature - it's actually a paradise. However, this is increasingly turning into hell for local residents. Under the motto "Tutti Gas!", Lignano is invaded by thousands and thousands of party animals every year. Most of them come from Austria and Germany. And they cause chaotic conditions, as the Austrian newspaper "Kronen Zeitung" reports.

The conditions are particularly bad at Whitsun: corpses of alcoholic beverages cause constant rescue and ambulance calls, mountains of garbage pile up in the town and on the beaches and the party noise lasts until the early hours of the morning. All of this is exacerbated by TV stations that want to make ratings with images of the escalation.

"We all don't want that anymore. It was too much."

But that should now be over. "Thanks to numerous helpers, we managed to get the town and the beach back in order every day in just a few hours early in the morning - but the mayor doesn't want any more of that. It was too much," tourism councillor Massimo Brini is quoted as saying by the "Kronen Zeitung".

Mayor Laura Giorgi is now planning drastic measures against booze tourism. From 2025, alcohol is only to be served to restaurant guests with table seats and binge drinking on the beaches is to be banned. To compensate for this, alternative events are to be organized outside the city.

Resistance to the emergency brake

The fact that those responsible are pulling the emergency brake is also due to the fact that Whitsun next year falls in the peak season at the beginning of June. "We don't want to put our guests through that," explained Brini.

The city administration's plans are to be discussed by the city senate in two weeks' time. But there is already resistance: bar and snack bar owners are certainly not happy, as they are threatened with a considerable loss of turnover.
