At least ten people have died in a fire at a retirement home near the city of Zaragoza in north-eastern Spain, according to media reports. The head of government of the autonomous region of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, confirmed the number of deaths in the home in Villafranca de Ebro and declared a day of mourning for this Saturday, as he announced on X.

Two other people were in a critical condition after the fire in the home in Villafranca de Ebro in the autonomous region of Aragon, a reporter from the state radio station RTVE reported from the scene of the accident on Friday morning. The fire broke out at around 5 a.m. for as yet unknown reasons. At the time of the fire, there were 82 residents in the home, the reporter continued. It is unclear how many staff were present.
The fire department, police, doctors and psychologists were deployed. No further details were initially known. The fire is further sad news for Spain after severe storms recently hit large parts of the country, killing at least 224 people.
