  • The coast off North Carolina in the middle east of the USA is considered a hotspot for remains of prehistoric sharks.
  • The largest of the three prehistoric teeth is about the size of a hand and is probably at least 2.6 million years old.

Amateur diver Alex Guirgues probably wouldn't have expected this: Together with friends, he takes part in an organized diving tour off the coast of North Carolina and discovers three objects between the sand and rocks that look like huge, pointed teeth.

A hand-sized primal shark tooth

His initial suspicions were confirmed a short time later. They are indeed the teeth of a megalodon, the prehistoric shark that could grow up to 18 meters in size and lived in the world's oceans around 2.6 million years ago.

Divers keep finding relics of this prehistoric monster. The fossilized teeth fragments are even more common on some coasts.
