Zurich City Council has lifted the moratorium on the construction of mobile phone antennas, which was still in place in some areas: This means that antennas can now also be erected on school buildings, hospitals, playgrounds and retirement and nursing homes.

With the lifting of the moratorium, other municipal properties can now also be used for the installation of 5G antennas, the city council stated in a press release on Wednesday. However, the location must be suitable. In addition, proof must be provided that the installation "optimizes the exposure to mobile phone radiation in the surrounding area".

The city council had already lifted the moratorium on new antennas on municipal buildings in October 2002. However, it retained it for certain buildings such as school buildings and hospitals.

At that time, there had not yet been sufficient research into whether radiation exposure from mobile phone antennas had any health effects, the city council writes. "Current studies show that the applicable installation limits provide sufficient protection against exposure from mobile phone installations."
