The Zurich Cantonal Council has begun discussing the cantonal implementation of the care initiative. The first stage of implementation focuses on the promotion of nursing training.

The Introductory Act to the Federal Act on the Promotion of Nursing Training obliges the cantonal colleges to increase the number of nursing degrees.

For example, they are to take measures to raise awareness of the training and reduce the number of students dropping out. In addition, the training is to be made more attractive with subsidies.

The Cantonal Council discussed the introductory law at its first reading on Monday. The thrust of the law was undisputed. The final adoption of the law will take place in the second reading at one of the next cantonal council meetings.

On November 28, 2021, voters approved the care initiative. The initiative calls on the federal government and the cantons to invest in the training of nursing staff as well as better working conditions and higher wages. The Federal Council then decided on a two-stage implementation.
