The unemployment rate in the cantons of Eastern Switzerland remained largely unchanged in July. In the cantons of St. Gallen and Thurgau, the rate rose by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month to 1.8 and 2.2 percent respectively.

At the end of July, 9133 people were registered with a regional employment center (RAV) in the canton of St. Gallen, as the cantonal Department of Economic Affairs wrote in a press release on Tuesday. This is 1087 more jobseekers than in the same month a year ago and 158 more than in June of this year. "This means that unemployment is trending upwards for the year as a whole," the Department of Economic Affairs continued.

3344 people were registered as unemployed in the canton of Thurgau at the end of July, as the cantonal Office of Economy and Labor wrote in a press release. This means that the number of unemployed people rose by 139 compared to the previous month. Compared to the previous year, the unemployment rate increased by 0.5 percentage points, from 1.7 percent at the end of July 2023 to 2.2 percent at the end of July this year. There was an increase in all age categories.

The number of jobseekers also increased, according to the Office of Economy and Labor of the Canton of Thurgau. At the end of June, 6026 people were looking for a new job, compared to 6312 at the end of July.

Innerrhoden with lowest figure

The unemployment rate in the canton of Glarus fell slightly: from 1.3 percent in June this year to 1.2 percent at the end of July. This is according to figures from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco). The figures in Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden remained unchanged at 1.3 and 0.6 percent respectively. There was also no change (0.8 percent) compared to the previous month in Graubünden.
