Table tennis and table football instead of a ban on cell phones: the cantonal school in Graubünden wants to encourage pupils to use their cell phones less and socialize more by offering various alternative activities and preventative measures.

Recently, the Lyceum Alpinum in Zuoz made headlines when it severely restricted the use of cell phones at the start of the school year. The cantonal school in Chur is taking a completely different approach, as principal Philippe Benguerel explained on Friday when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

In the current school year, the cantonal school is focusing on various preventative measures in dealing with digital devices in general, not just in relation to cell phones. "This involves technical support in the correct operation of the various digital devices, raising awareness and reflecting on personal and social skills, as well as legal issues," said Benguerel.

The aim is to explain to young people how the various devices work, raise their awareness of legal issues and encourage them to reflect on their personal and social skills.

The private school in Zuoz wants to strengthen relationships between pupils by banning cell phones. This is also a goal in Chur. In order to increase the moments of encounter and sociability during the breaks, the public secondary school provides the pupils with table tennis, table football and reading corners - and even a piano for spontaneous break sessions. "We are delighted to see that our pupils actively make use of this offer," reported the principal.
