According to a survey of 235 companies, the Solothurn economy has bottomed out. It is therefore cautiously optimistic about the future. However, industry is not picking up speed. This is shown by the economic barometer of the cantonal chamber of commerce and the chamber of trade.

Expectations for the third quarter are cautious, but there are signs of an improvement, according to the economic barometer published on Thursday.
The situation in the metal, electrical and mechanical engineering industries (MEM) in particular is tense. Weak global demand and high inventories are depressing the mood. Trade is also continuing to struggle.
By contrast, the medical technology, ancillary construction and some service sectors are in a positive mood. The most positive outlook was reported by business-related services.
Reluctance to create new jobs
According to the economic barometer, the Solothurn labor market remains robust. The unemployment rate has remained constant at 2.2 percent for several months.
However, companies are being somewhat more cautious when recruiting staff. "The number of employees is likely to remain the same or even fall slightly", according to the economic barometer.
