The Schönausteg in the city of Bern will be renovated this winter at a cost of CHF 5 million. For the renovation, the almost 120-year-old bridge will be dismantled, removed and replaced in a specialized plant. A replacement footbridge will be built so that the Aare can still be crossed at Dählhölzli.

As the City of Bern announced on Wednesday, the Schönausteg will be able to be used for another 80 years thanks to the renovation. It was last repaired 37 years ago. According to the press release, steel parts had rusted, anchorages and bridge bearings were damaged and the wooden structure was rotten in places.

According to the city of Bern, the Schönausteg will be dismantled in the night from October 31 to November 1. Ten days earlier, the replacement footbridge will be erected around 250 meters downstream. Dalmaziquai will be closed during the construction work.
