SBB, the Federal Office of Transport, the canton and the city of Fribourg inaugurated the modernized Fribourg railroad station on Thursday. The platforms are now longer, wider and higher and are accessible via a new pedestrian underpass.

The total cost of the completed work amounts to around CHF 120 million, as announced by SBB on Thursday. The platforms were raised to allow ground-level access. They were also widened and lengthened to increase their capacity.

The new underpass, in turn, is intended to facilitate access to the platforms and better connect the station to the city, according to the press release. The underpass has been partially accessible to the public since December 2023 and is now fully usable. It will be presented to the public on September 28 as part of an inauguration ceremony.

Second stage begins

From next week, the access points between the existing underpass and tracks 4 and 5 will also be renovated, SBB added. The corresponding ramps will be closed for nine months.

Refurbishment work is also planned in the existing underpass over the next few years. The floor, ceiling and shop windows will be renovated in stages from fall 2025 to 2029, as will the roof, façade and apartments in the station building. SBB estimates the cost of this work at around 17 million francs. They will be financed by SBB Real Estate.
